Our Story
How it Started
By JustineIn my mind the story started early during our sophomore year of college at WPI. I was in the lab in the middle of the night (as was often the case during my time at WPI) working on my first ECE 2049 project. My lab partner struggled with the material so I was mostly on my own but I couldn't work out what was wrong with my code. I sent out a distress message to the fencing club chat, hoping someone who had taken the course might be able to provide some guidance. Will offered to come help and stayed up most of night with me, helping me get the project completed in time. I wondered if there may have been something more going on, given the extreme generosity (there wasn't, he's just THAT nice).Over that year, I became close friends with many of the fencers and spent a bunch of my free time with them. We started a game of Risk that was abandoned eight hours in, went on 2 AM Price Chopper runs, and lit the patio on fire. Throughout this I started to notice that Will seemed pretty cool, especially when wearing sunglasses or driving his WRX. He seemed to share a lot of my values and he was REALLY nice to me that time in the lab. That spring I went to Clark Con (a comic convention at Clark that my friend was running a panel at) with the group. Will couldn't make it but he complimented me on my Supergirl costume and that had me thinking yet again. While I'm still fairly proud of the costume, it was dorky and homemade. Our fencing group planned a little road trip for that spring once classes were done. It featured stops at each of our families vacation homes with some hiking and camping at the start. Our second stop was at a house in Canada on Lake Memphremagog where we had a number of adventures. The second night there we thought it'd be fun to all sleep out on the balcony in our sleeping bags and maybe spot a moose. That night, we were up the latest looking out for the moose and spent time talking after everyone else was asleep. We talked about life and I didn't really want it to end. The next night, our last night in Canada, we decided to make a fire. The guys tried very hard to start the fire "early man" style with just a couple of sticks without any luck. Once we got the fire going for real, with matches, they found that it was fun to attempt to light the matches by flicking them off of the strike strip. Will managed to flick one that landed in my hair! He quickly brushed it out of my hair, pulling me in close in the process. Seems like maybe he liked me.That night, the others decided it was too cold to sleep outside but Will and I were still hoping to see a moose and didn't want to miss out on adventure. I was determined to make the most of the night and kept the questions coming so neither of us would fall asleep. We talked about our interests, childhood, anything I could think to ask about. Then, in the middle of the night, under the stars, he kissed me.
The Proposal
By JustineTo set the stage, I was having a crazy week. At work, I was at the end of a software qualification cycle, where I test all the new features before they're released, that was a bit of a mess. Vacation, performance reviews, and then a UC flare had significantly cut into my testing time. As I was the only person with established knowledge on testing all of these features, the test period was extended a week to compensate. This helped, but only a little, so I was working long days and pushing to complete tests as quickly as I could. It was the final week of testing and I was doing everything I could to hit my deadline. To make things more challenging, that Tuesday I went to the emergency room due to intense pain caused by a kidney stone. I spent my time in the ER frantically working on tests. On Thursday, things started to ease up as I had finished my final tests, but some bugs still needed fixes. Friday morning was slow as the fixes made their way into the main development branch, and it wasn't until the afternoon that the new build was released. By that time I had an hour and a half left to perform as much testing as I could before I needed to leave to make it to the pizza and movie date night we had planned. After an intense hour and a half of multitasking, I finished just in time.Driving home I took in all the joyful holiday lights on people's homes. I talked to Will on the way who planned for me to go straight from my car to his so we'd make it to pizza in time. However, upon arriving home, I found that our Christmas lights were off. I was afraid they'd been damaged by the storm earlier that week and rushed to troubleshoot what was wrong, but Will insisted we had no time. We got in the car and I did what I could to investigate on the drive. Our lights are controlled by Alexa routines and our list of routines had gotten out of whack. Settings were changed and there was a new unnamed routine. Will suggested that maybe Alexa added it mistakenly when misinterpreting a voice command. I restored our routines and emphasized that we would continue investigating as soon as we got home. I was distraught that our house was sad without it's beautiful lights.Once we made it to Pepe's for pizza, I perked back up. The smell of the pizza revived me and it was as tasty as ever. Pizza was followed by Wicked, which we both enjoyed. On the way out, Will went to the bathroom which I thought was somewhat unnecessary given that we were only ten minutes from home. As we approached the house, I saw some strange lights lit up and draped over a tree in our back yard. As soon as we parked, I started investigating. In the front yard, I immediately noted that the lights on the house were still intact. This eliminated my theory that the storm had torn some of the lights from the roofline and thrown them over the tree. I found that the wire running power up to the roof lights was gone, explaining why they were not lit. At this point, I got a bit scared. Clearly someone did this, but who would deliberately sabotage our lights and commit this sort of vandalism? I was about to walk around to the back, when Will insisted I come through the house to see what he was looking at. He brought me onto the back deck and pointed at the lights saying to take a closer look. I had no idea what he was trying to show me, but he kept saying to take a closer look, so eventually I did. Right then, the words "Marry Me?" lit up in the yard. It took me a few moments to re-read and process what was happening. When I turned around, Will was on one knee with twinkly red and green lights behind him. Before I could say yes, he insisted on giving his speech. Between his sweet words and my relief after all the stress and nerves, I teared up. Finally, he asked the question and I said yes.We spent the rest of that night re-living the moments. Will explained his many plans and backup plans. I learned he deliberately tampered with our Alexa routines, then had to hide in the bathroom after the movie to restore what I had undone on the ride over. Apparently I did a pretty good job almost sabotaging the proposal!
